The Oak Bluffs wastewater commission on Wednesday voted unanimously to repair a failing septic grid buried underneath Ocean Park, partly to satisfy orders from the state Department of Environmental Protection to address problems of treated effluent seeping to the surface.

The board voted to spend up to $400,000 to dig up a portion of the park and replace the grid. The work will start this fall and be completed in time for next summer.

Wastewater superintendent Joe Alosso said last week the commission had already been authorized to borrow the money through a town meeting vote. But at Wednesday’s meeting the commission instead voted to take funds from the wastewater retained earnings account to make the repairs. Voters will need to authorize the transfer at a town meeting.

The DEP issued a notice of noncompliance to the town last September after an inspection in late August found several effluent beds under the park were not operating properly, causing treated effluent to come to the surface periodically. The town has since entered into a consent order with the state that sets a timeline for fixing the problem.
