The Manning modular homes arrived on site from Huntington Homes in Vermont on Tuesday amid great fanfare, as our family and friends and very special neighbors all cheered the day along. Luncheon was served for builder Dave Gampfer and his crew, who will work on the site for the next few months. So, like the Phoenix, the home has arisen from the ashes. Thank you to one and all for your continuous support of this long process.

On Saturday, July 11 at 11 a.m. the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association will have their Summer Reading Kick-Off at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. Aquinnah library director Jennifer Christy will be on hand to paint faces. Please come and join the excitement. Stop by the library this summer and join the summer reading program. Read fun books, earn coupons to redeem at the shops at the Cliffs, and earn a beautiful T-shirt that is designed by Island cartoonist Paul Karasik. Thank you to Hatmarcha Shop, Stony Creek, the Aquinnah Shop, Faith’s Seafood Shack, How-Wass-Wee Trading Post, and the Dreamcatcher for their generous participation in the Aquinnah Public Library summer reading program.

The Aquinnah community programs committee has started its summer program this week. Thank you to Mrs. Hannah Malkin for once again offering her swimming pool for Aquinnah children to have swimming lessons. On the first day of swimming, the counselors showed the young ones how successful the program is with a demonstration by one young student who had been afraid of the water two years ago, but is now a swimming champion. Charles Shipway has also returned to teach the students sailing on the waters of Menemsha Pond.

Thank you to Max and Cheryl Batzer and their sons for having another wonderful Fourth of July party at their Lobsterville home. Since they have invited all of their special friends on the Vineyard, they now have to extend their invitation to special friends on Nantucket as well. Needless to say, we all had a grand time and most of us will not see each other until next July 4th.

Get well wishes to Joan Kistner, who is hospitalized near her home in Poughkeepsie. She will be feeling much better once our grandson Noah arrives to brighten her spirits.

Ronald Jeffers has remained a patient at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and is expected to return to his Aquinnah home this week.

Congratulations and all the best to Chief Timothy Rich of the Chilmark Police Department upon his retirement after thirty years protecting and serving the up-Island neighborhoods.

Condolences to the family and friends of Jacqueline Sexton, who passed away on June 30. Jackie was the former Chilmark columnist for the Martha’s Vineyard Times and participated in the writing class at the Howes House, where she was an inspiration to many and especially to our late mother, Jacquelyne.

Condolences to the families of Carlyle Cronig and Albert Littlefield, who have also been multi-generational family friends over the decades.

Paul and Carolyn Wiess, as well as Brett Sherlock and James Booty, who are visiting the Vineyard for the first time, are at the home of Mark and Marilyn Wheaton. Mark and Marilyn returned to Canada three years ago after having lived in Nevis in the West Indies for five years following Mark’s retirement, and chose Niagara-on-the-Lake because it is the only New England-like town in Ontario. It reminds them of Edgartown.

The Chilmark Church Flea Market has moved this year. Look for the signs on North Road, near the Jenkinson homestead. The market is open every Wednesday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during July and August, closing for the season the first weekend in September. One will always find the most unique treasures at the flea. See you there!

Mr. Joe Spinelli of Lighthouse Road is at the flea with a new array of his jewelry which is always a favorite. Joe has been at the flea for nearly thirty years, and he and Jane Neumann are probably the longest continuous attendees.

The Federated Church at 45 South Summer street in Edgartown will be sponsoring chowder suppers to support the Island Food Pantry. Supper dates are July 16, 23, and 30 as well as August 6 and 13 from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the Parish House. Adults will be charged $8 and children $5, which includes a cup of chowder, a salad, tea or lemonade and a chocolate chip cookie. Please try to attend one of these evenings to support a very worthy cause.

If you found a star-shaped wampum earring during the Aquinnah Fourth of July parade down Old South Road, please call me at the above number and leave a message. It is of great sentimental value. Thank you.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Curtis Maciel on July 10. Chelsea Hobbs will party on July 12.

My most favorite publisher in the world, Dick Reston, will observe his very special day on July 14. I had a very brief visit with Dick and Jody the other day and they are both looking great and retirement has been good to them.

Tobias Vanderhoop will party on July 15, and shares the day with John Occouch Vanderhoop, Misha Vandal and Sonny Sylvia. Evangeline “Coco” Sanfilippo will celebrate on July 16, and shares the day with Otis Burt. Dr. Gerald Steinberg will observe his special day on July 17.
