We had good weather over the long holiday weekend. Roger Blake, of North Tisbury, reports that business has been quite brisk at his pie gazebo, where he sells homemade pies daily. He reports that on Saturday he started out with 100 fresh baked pies and by 5 p.m. there were none left to sell. Traffic downtown is extremely congested these days; the bus traffic has had a substantial increase in ridership, so you have to remember to build in another 20 minutes more into your travel time.

Last Saturday night most of the Tisbury High School Class of 1959 gathered at the Square Rigger Restaurant in Edgartown to celebrate their 50th reunion. The event was organized by Mardell Francis and was preceded by a cocktail hour at the home of Emily Frank. Everyone had a wonderful time, catching up with classmates and talking about the changes we have seen in Island life.

Susan and Andy Boass, of Hopkinton and Middle Road, were at their summer home last weekend. Andy is a beekeeper and sells his product from a card table on the edge of Middle Road. His wife Susan, one of the famous Glimmerglass Girls, is busy preparing for houseguests but found time to attend the annual Fourth of July parade.

Daniel Whiting and his children Emma and David, of Celebration, Fla., visited his sister Tara and mother, Bobbie, at the old Parsonage last week. They enjoyed the Fourth of July parade in Edgartown and look forward to returning for the fair.

Jill Carlton and her husband, Pete Karman, of New Haven, Conn., arrived last Thursday to spend two weeks at her State Road home. Pete reports that after a lifetime of riding Vineyard ferries, Jill and son Alex Karman did a sampling of those plying the Dalmatian coast and found them frequent, fast and easy to use. They’re just back from a two-week “roots” trip, first to the island where Pete’s mother was born and then down the coast to Dubrovnik, where Pete’s dad came from. The weather was fine, the food good, the wine reasonable and the locals friendly. They rode Jadrolinija ferries between Zadar and Ugljan, across the Gulf of Kotor, from Drvenik to Hvar and then Split, and from Split to Ancona in Italy on their way to a too-brief return to Rome, where they both once lived and where Alex studied. They have been enjoying their new deck with the good weather we have been having.

Don and Marian Mohr of Otis Bassett Road are having a busy summer so far. In June their son Steve Fletcher and his wife Janice, arrived from Tega Cay, S.C. for a 10-day visit. They brought with them Simba and Sonny, their six-month-old golden retrievers. They had a fun time going to the beach, walking along the paths, going to visit Debra Marlin and her golden, Braveheart, in Vineyard Haven. That was a traffic stopper on Main street. The days were full of fun and laughter for Don, who hinted often that the puppies should stay here with us. Their golden, Abigail, was a very unhappy camper all week. We were sad to see them go. Monday their daughter Linda Leland from Marietta, Ga., arrived for a week, and it will be a very special time visiting with her and remembering the precious memories of summer.

Doris Anton, of New York city, and her friend Princess Bibbi are in residence at her house on Tiah’s Cove. Doris reports that she is here for the summer. She is preparing for houseguests later this month.

Bob Ganz, of North Road, attended the Fourth of July Parade in Edgartown and he proudly marched in his Army uniform along with many other veterans. He reports that he’s invested in okra seeds much as Malcolm Hall has in his garden. He looks forward to a bumper crop of okra and is seeking recipes.

Marian Irving reports that the popular Sundaes on Saturday returns tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. over at the First Congregational Church. They will be offering ice cream sundaes with your choice of toppings. Also lemonade and ice tea will be available to sip in the shade of the church lawn. All proceeds will benefit the preservation of the historic building.

Remember that the 51st annual Friends of the library benefit book sale at the school begins in three weeks. Lee Revere reports that they began accepting book donations at the gym last Monday. The sale starts Friday, July 31, 9 a.m. to 3p.m. and continues on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2. Books will be half price on Sunday; the event concludes with a free book day on Monday, August 3. Any questions, please call 508-693-0773.

Shirley Mayhew would like to remind you that there will be a ceremony to honor Betty Franklin over at the library on Sunday. The event, a celebration of Betty’s life, will start at 3:30 p.m. Her many friends on the Vineyard are invited to attend.

Tara Whiting reports that her Daniel and his kids, David, 12 and Emma, 8, were here for the week of the Fourth. David worked the riding lawnmower for the first time, Emma helped out with the farm work, and Daniel did some maintenance work. David got some sailing lessons, Emma got to ride her pony, and there was also some fishing at Menemsha. The night of the Fourth they went to the Flying Horses, where each kid and her brother got the brass ring, a fitting end to a great visit. They have promised to be back in time for the fair.

Ed Levine and his wife Vicki Bijur, of New York city, and, have been vacationing at her mother’s home off Tiah’s Cove Road. They are here for a two-week stay.

Warren and Judy Morse, of James Way, report that their daughter Karen Girouard and her children Tom, John, Ted and Charlie of North Attleboro are vacationing with them at their home. On Tuesday Karen was the photographer at the wedding of Stephen Roscillo and Maria Belardo. Charlie reports that they have been enjoying the beach and visiting friends and relatives.

Sal Laterra, of Providence, R.I. arrived yesterday afternoon to spend a long weekend with Phyllis Meras at her Music street home.

Nancy Cramer reports that the Shaw Cramer Gallery in Vineyard Haven is having a reception Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Authors Nancy Shaw Cramer and photographer Kathy Newman created a book based on the concept that artists are good cooks. Artists Leslie Baker, Sandy Bernat, Eva Gallant, the late Dawn Greeley, Jennifer McCurdy, Julia Mitchell, Lucy Mitchell, Adele Schonbrun, Heather (Sussman) Sommers, Wendy Weldon and Rez Williams were invited to participate in this prototype publication and will each be showing a piece of their artwork in a spotlight show in the main gallery. The exhibit runs until July 16.

Kristin Buck, of Panhandle Road, reports that the Vineyard Nursing Association will be having their annual clambake fundraiser and auction at the Field Gallery on Wednesday, July 22, at 6 p.m. This is their 25th anniversary and they predict it will be one of the best parties ever. The event is sponsored by Cronig’s Market and Allied Waste Services. Tickets and other information are available by calling 508-696-0785.

Cherrilla Brown, in addition to waiting on customers at Alley’s General Store, and Leslie Monast produce By the Sea salt. It is a combination of kosher salt and selected herbs made right in her kitchen from her mother’s special recipe. She also developed José Can You Sea Salt that has a little kick to it. They have received a trademark for both items and report selling more than 10,000 bottles last year Islandwide and mail order. It’s right for any spice cabinet — and a useful Vineyard souvenir or gift.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum will hold the 11th annual evening of discovery, Martha’s Vineyard Through the Ages, on Thursday night. It will be hosted by the Vose Family Trust. For more information, call 508-627-4441.

“On July 7, 1946 Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Duys and their daughter Rosemarie and son Gerrit Jr. moved from the Jennie Shoemaker farm on Tea Lane in Chilmark where they had been living for the past nine years to their new home on Music street. They have recently completed the purchase of the former Jerry Mayhew house, barn and several acres of farm land. Moving along with them is their niece, Mrs. Marie Jacqueline Van den Heuvel, who has been making her home with them since her arrival in this country from Brussels, Belgium several months ago.”
