The comedic drama Noodle, the third film in its summer film series, screens on Sunday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center.

One reviewer called it an Israeli film about grief and loss that takes the form of a crowd-pleaser: “That’s an odd combination. It works pretty well because for most of its length, we have no idea where it’s going.”

Mili Avital plays Miri, a twice-widowed El Al flight attendant whose life is upended when her Chinese housekeeper disappears, leaving behind her little boy (played by the hauntingly endearing BaoQiChen). Miri embarks on the daunting task of taking the boy, whom she dubs Noodle, to China, in search of, as a friend critically points out, “finding a mother among a billion people.” But Mili’s efforts to reunite mother and son take her on an amazing voyage with Noodle, a voyage that not only brings them both unexpected adventure (and misadventure), but touches her profoundly and changes her feelings about her little Chinese charge.

Ayelet Menahemi directed this award-winning feature film with a light hand and a firm touch.

Rony Yedidia, Consul of Israel at the Consulate General of Israel to New England, will introduce the film.

Admission is $10 at the door, at the Hebrew Center on Center street in Vineyard Haven.
