The musical Summer of ’42 will open Thursday, July 16, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven.

Based on the novel and screenplay by Herman Raucher, the story takes place on a small island in New England in the infamous summer of 1942. America is at war, and 15-year-old Hermie and his buddies experience hilarious adolescent adventures in a summer they’ll never forget. Along the way Hermie learns about life, love and the scope of human compassion.

With music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum and book by Hunter Foster, this fast-paced and entertaining musical is sure to delight anyone who is or has ever been a teenager. It’s rated PG-13.

Directed and choreographed by Taffy McCarthy with musical direction by Linda Berg and accompaniment by a band of Island musicians, Summer of ’42 is produced by Island Theatre Workshop and boasts a stellar cast including Jonah Lipsky as Hermie and Katie Feeks as Dorothy. Anna Yukovitch, Rosie Bick, Zada Clarke, Jerome Pikor, Evan Barron, Jon Ryan and Don Lyons round out the cast.

Performances dates are July 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 27, 29, 30, and August 2. Curtain is 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at the door.
