It isn’t everyday that I can provide a clue to solve a Chilmark mystery but here goes. Martina Mastromonaco, superintendent of beaches for Chilmark, displayed a horseshoe she recovered from the eroding cliffs of Lucy Vincent Beach. Over the years I have been reading and quoting in this column interesting bits from Lucy Vincent’s diaries that she wrote from 1908 through the 1950’s. In an early entry she tells us of the sudden death of the horse that belonged to her father, Elijhu Mosher, while working out at the cliffs. She reported that he buried the horse where it fell on the edge of the cliffs. Could it be that there are three more shoes in the eroded cliff still to be found? I will try to find the entry and the exact date of that event on a quieter day this winter and then we will know how long it took the horseshoe to fall over the cliff.
