On Sunday, July 19, a giant Mother Earth puppet together with accompany the Green Man — a 12-foot-tall spirit of vegetation — lead a wild menagerie of puppets down Main street in Vineyard Haven.

The parade marks the middle of the third annual Martha’s Vineyard Puppet Festival. Troupes from Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine join forces with four groups from the Vineyard to offer shows and tell stories from Africa, Asia, the forest and the sea.

The festival begins Friday, July 17 at noon, with shows by the campers at Sense of Wonder, who have been studying with a master puppeteer, at 23 Grove avenue, Vineyard Haven.

Saturday morning at 10 a.m., the festival continues at Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury with Primrose Puppets and others.

The parade begins at 5 p.m. on Sunday and is followed by shows at the Katharine Cornell Theatre by Puppetoke, Cobb Meadow Puppets, and Felted Hat Puppets.

Bella will perform her bilingual musical shows in Portuguese and English on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Che’s Lounge and Monday evening at Katharine Cornell.

Shows on Monday evening also include Demazana and The Butter Thief by Spindrift Marionettes, Reggae Limbo by Jean del Giudice, and shadow puppets by Robin Tuck. A $5 donation is asked per show.
