Here we are in the middle of July and one man at the nursery the other day said it was really March and we were dreaming of summer. I think we are all thinking that there is some summer out there and maybe we will have a longer summer than most.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past month. Big balloons go out to Paige Donovan who celebrated her day July 18; Elizabeth Dourian on July 19; John Murray on July 20; Riley Craig, Brian Hurley, and Shannon Morris, who all celebrated July 21; and to Abigail Lively, who celebrated her day July 23.

Special wishes go out Cheryl Welch, who celebrated her day July 22.

Michele Whitney and Tom Adams have been busy entertaining. They had as their guest Laurie Sylvia who came for her class reunion; then they all had dinner with George and Susan Willoughby. Then the next weekend Lena Vieira came for the weekend. It was a busy time but the visit was great.

I received a phone call from Helen Hines of Edgartown Bay Road that she has had an extended time in Florida, but she is looking forward to her return to the Vineyard on August 2. She is also looking forward to the visit from her son Jonathan and his wife Olga who live in Russia, and just arranged the reception of President Obama on his recent visit. Helen also celebrated her birthday on July 2.

At 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, a Choral Evensong in celebration of the lives of Bishop John Burgess and his wife, Esther, will be held at Trinity Church in Oak Bluffs with the combined church choirs from St. Andrew's, Grace and Trinity Episcopal. The preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Harold T. Lewis, rector of Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh.

Stelle Burnham of Edgartown, Bob Pacheco of Reliable Market and Dukes County's veteran's agent Jo Ann Murphy are organizing a new effort to supply Island soldiers with supplies they need and enjoy. A similar effort last year was very successful. Many Islanders contributed. The goal is to send parcels of food — not mess hall food or field rations, but highly desirable and badly wanted supplements — and needed T-shirts to Vineyarders in the military wherever they are posted, but particularly in the Afghanistan war zone. You can call Stelle at 508-627-9521 for information, or address donations to her, at RFD 140, Edgartown 02539. Any donation is welcomed no matter how big or small.

Thank you, Stelle, for all you do to help our servicemen and women who put their lives on the line every day. You truly are a special woman.

Have a great day and keep the home candles burning.
