Les Femmes, a painting/collage exhibit by Jeanette Demeestère, is at the Chilmark Public Library from July 25 to August 14, with an opening reception this Saturday, July 25 from 3 to 6 p.m. An artist who lives in Paris, France, Ms.Demeestère has spent every summer in Chilmark for the past 15 years with her family at their home off Middle Road. She is kn own for her portraits and collages, rendered in watercolor, pastel (both oil and dry), charcoal and collage; as well as her soft, muted colors and strong fine lines.

Ms. Demeestère studied both English literature and applied arts at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a student of Elmer Bishoff and Hans Hoffmann. She is also a Professor of American Literature at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, France, where she has lived and worked for thirty years. In 2002, she translated the work of the German-Jewish poet and artist, Else Lasker-Schüler, Selected Poems, published by Green Integer Press. Several exhibitions of her work have been shown in Paris.
