Island police responded to a slew of motor vehicle accidents, broke up numerous parties and made several drunk driving arrests over the weekend, one for a boat operator.

Tisbury police first received a call of a possible intoxicated boater at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the manager of the West Chop Club called to report a belligerent man on the beach causing a disturbance. The manager told police he tried to move the man along but was unsuccessful.

Police arrived on the scene and witnessed the man, later identified as Gregg Gerathy, 49, of West Tisbury, untie his Boston Whaler and motor west into a fog bank, nearly running into the Skipper charter boat off West Chop.

Officers yelled to Mr. Gerathy to stop, to no avail.

Police then headed to the end of Lake street where they met a boat from the state environmental police and the harbor master boat. When Mr. Gerathy saw authorities waiting for him, he turned around and headed back toward the entrance to Lake Tashmoo, police said.

The harbor master and state police boats chased, and eventually rafted the Boston Whaler and brought it back to shore.

Mr. Gerathy was charged with operating a boat under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a boat, failure to stop for a police officer, and having improper numbers on a boat.

Tisbury police also responded to a pair of serious motor vehicle accidents on Beach Road Saturday afternoon that occurred within a few hours of one another. The first occurred around 2:35 p.m. when a Dodge pickup truck driven by Bruce Swift, 65, of Tisbury, rear-ended a Toyota sport utility vehicle near the Shell gas station.

No one was injured in the crash, although the driver of the Toyota, Aline Hanorata, 25, of Oak Bluffs, was cited for giving false identification to police.

At 3:55 p.m. police responded to a two-car crash with injuries on Beach Road in front of Granite City Electric.

Police said Joseph F. Cywinski, 66, was traveling toward Vineyard Haven when he reached for his cell phone and accidentally swerved into the oncoming traffic lane, colliding with a vehicle driven by Amber Simonin, 17, of Oak Bluffs.

Mr. Cywinski declined treatment at the scene, although Ms. Simonin was transported by ambulance to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Both vehicles were badly damaged and taken from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. No citations were issued; the investigation is ongoing.

Police also responded to a call of a fallen limb on Lighthouse Road.

On Thursday Aquinnah police participated in the statewide Click it or Ticket program, a seat-belt use enforcement campaign. Through the weekend, police made several dozen stops and issued a number of tickets and written warnings.
