Wampanoag Language

The Death and Rebirth of the Wampanoag Language is the topic for Professor David J. Silverman, of George Washington University, when he speaks on Wednesday, July 29, at 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

Dr. Silverman, author of Faith and Boundaries: Colonists, Christianity and Community among the Wampanoag Indians of Martha’s Vineyard 1600-1871, has spent many years on the Vineyard researching Island history, where some of the Tribe members are currently teaching what is known of the language to their children.

His other publications, including Deposing the Sachem to Defend the Sachemship: Indian Land Sales and Political Structure on Martha’s Vineyard, 1680-1740, add to the history of the Island.
