There is a new star in the sky over Vineyard Haven, by way of Dodger’s Hole. In a most serendipitous series of events last Thursday night, I became the proud new mama of a nine-week-old black, domestic short hair. His name is Teddy Paul Bruschi Kennedy Gardella. The name Paul is for a gracious friend in the neighborhood who volunteered to be his godfather. Teddy is keeping us busy and awake at all hours. I had forgotten how active and disruptive a kitten can be. Nonna was pleased to have a new grand cat; accompanying us to his first vet visit. Nonna marvelled at the care and concern shown to Teddy by Dr. Buck and technician Caroleen at the Vineyard Vet Clinic. Would that all HMO’s ran as well and caring as this facility!

My left hand is much improved, thanks to all of you who have asked. I am still wearing the white glove, a la Michael Jackson. The glove is, of course, an interesting attack point for Teddy. I wrap myself in a comforter at night to protect myself from his frequent forays.

Iole and I are out and about on a dizzying array of cocktail parties and dinners. Last Tuesday we made it to the Capawock for Julie and Julia. Julia Child was one of our favorite Americans of all time. Even if you’ve just eaten, you’ll become quite hungry watching this film.

My dear friends Wesly and Heliliani (Lilly for short) had twins born prematurely. David and Jonathan are adorable and very much welcomed by big brother Anthony. The twins had to live at the hospital in Boston for many months. They are home now and experiencing some developmental problems, especially David. Their pediatrician, Dr. Miller, and Wesly’s boss at Oakleaf Landscaping, John Hoff, have organized a fabulous party and fundraiser in their honor tomorrow, Sept. 5, at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. This is a potluck event with music, games, and all are invited from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Anthony and the twins will be there! Come by, meet the family, bring the kids. For details, call 508-696-0581.

Our American Legion Post 257 on Martin Road hosts a spaghetti dinner tomorrow from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Admission is $10; kids under 12 eat for $5.

The Rotary Club is sponsoring a terrific view of the Island on Oct. 17, a bike tour of 50K or 100k, depending upon your stamina. Off-Islanders are welcome! Proceeds benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters of MV as well as other Rotary charities. You have five days left to get a discount registration price. If you don’t make that deadline, you can still ride. October is a beautiful month for a bike ride. My mother says one of her greatest regrets in life is that she never learned to ride a bike. I have offered to teach her this summer (at the age of 92) but for some reason she thinks it’s not feasible. So you won’t see us on the trail but you might see us handing out water. Good luck!

On Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m., our library will scrren a film about the Young at Heart, a chorus made up of seniors, average age is 81, who perform contemporary, classic rock, and pop music. Nonna and I will see you there.

Get well wishes go to Judy Davey.

Anniversary bouquets are sent to Bruce and Robin Bailey on Sept. 10.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Chelsea Leigh Mercier and Tyler Mayst today. Tomorrow honors Leda Giatti and Stephanie Knight. September 6 is shared by Janet Stiller and Arthur Bailow. Sept. 7 is claimed by Lynda King. Sept. 8 belongs to Kate King. And on Sept. 9 Ted Desrosiers, Joan Didato, Ben Sweet, James Schofield, and Bob Klein take the cake. Many happy returns.
