The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) will be sponsoring their fifth annual powwow in Aquinnah Circle over the weekend. The public is invited and encouraged to participate in the cultural events planned during the day on Saturday and Sunday. The gates open at 11 a.m. Grand entry is at 1 p.m. This year the powwow will observe the memory of our late Medicine Man Luther T. Madison. The Rez Dogs will be the host drum. There will be honoring ceremonies, dancing exhibitions, raffles throughout the day, and native vendors. Retiring of the Colors will be at 6 p.m.

The VTA bus stops at Aquinnah Circle and runs every hour throughout the day. There is also parking available at the foot of the Circle. Please join in the events and have a great weekend. Tickets are $10 for adults, or $15 for two days. Children five to 18 or elders over 65 are $5, or $7.50 for two days. Kids under five years of age are admitted free.

The powwow is being sponsored by the National Park Service, Department of Justice, Indian Health Service, Environmental Protective Agency, and the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal historic office/cultural resources, and the tribal human services, education, health, planning and natural resources departments.

There will be absolutely no drugs, no alcohol, no fires, no coolers, nor pets.

Tribal council chairman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, accompanied by tribal administrator Tobias J. Vanderhoop, attended the Archaeology of Harvard Yard excavation opening ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 10 at Matthews Hall which was the site of the Harvard Indian College. Cheryl and Tobias represented the Aquinnah Tribe as well as Tiffany Smalley (Harvard College ‘12), each with their remarks at the ground-breaking ceremony.

The Aquinnah Public Library has completed their summer reading program and would like to thank the following Aquinnah businesses for their generosity and support of the program: Aquinnah Shop, Hatmarcha, Howwasswee Trading Post, Faith’s Seafood, Dreamcatcher and Stony Creek. Thank you one and all for providing coupons for the reading program.

Noah James Manning returned home on Monday evening after spending the long weekend in New Hampshire with his parents, Paul and Theresa. They enjoyed a visit to Storyland and other great sites throughout the totally relaxing weekend. Thursday was a very special and proud day with Noah’s first day at the Chilmark Preschool. He will still attend Mandy Tomkins’ day care on a part-time basis where the learning has been fun and educational.

Condolences to the family and friends of Joanne (Pina) Marden who died recently in New Bedford. Many will remember Joanne and her family who once operated the pedal boats on Sunset Lake in Oak Bluffs for many years. She is survived by her husband Lloyd and sons Robert, Keith, and Gary.

Nina P. Butler, daughter of Lenny and Mallory Butler, has returned to her junior year at Wellesley College.

Caitlyn Hutchinson, daughter of Steve and Amana Hutchinson, has returned to University of Vermont for her junior year.

Anastasia Sargent, daughter of Megan Ottens-Sargent, is off to Goucher College for her freshman year.

Matthew Scott, son of Frank and Linda (Garvin), has returned to his junior year studies at Dartmouth College.

Samuel Scott, son of Frank and Linda (Garvin), is off to Nichols College in Dudley for his freshman year of college.

Michael F. Sellitti Jr., son of Michael and Cheryl (Vanderhoop), is off to Highpoint College in Highpoint, N.C. for his freshman year of college.

Tiffany Smalley, daughter of Jay and Millicent Smalley, has returned to her junior year studies at Harvard University. Tiffany and her classmates spent part of their summer studying in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Hillary Smith, daughter of Sue Smith of Aquinnah and Russell Smith of Tisbury, will begin her freshman year studies at Wheaton College.

Mark and Marilyn Wheaton of Aquinnah and Niagara-on-the-Lake are welcoming to their home, Home Free, off Lighthouse Road, their oldest and best friends from Toronto, Brian and Diane Chaput, together with their daughter Colette Villamizar and her husband Nick, formerly of New York and recently of Toronto, and their son, Brian Jr. of Montreal. Starting in 1989, the entire Chaput family vacationed with the Wheatons on the Vineyard each September till the late 90s but, although various family members came periodically in the past decade, this is Colette’s first visit since. Mark and Marilyn and the whole Chaput family are looking forward to renewing a tradition by celebrating her 30th birthday during this visit, just as they celebrated her 10th birthday on her first visit.

All the best to Jesse Wiener and Maggie Anderson on their wedding day Sept. 12 as they tie the knot upon the hill overlooking Nashaquitsa and Menemsha Ponds. Jesse is the son of Carolyn Feltz and Jerry Wiener of Aquinnah and graduated from MVRHS in 2004 and from Harvard in 2008. Jesse and Maggie have resided in Manhattan for the past year, pursing their careers. Congratulations.

Antone Matthew Araujo will be four years old on Sept. 16. Naushon William Galbraith will be 13 years old on Sept. 17 and shares the day with Penny Vanderhoop, Jason Baird and Dan Levitt. Sally Wiener will observe her special day on Sept. 18, as will Nadia Aiguier.
