An Edgartown man was seriously injured and charged with drunk driving and negligent operation on Wednesday after he crashed his motorcycle while trying to pass a car on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road at a high rate of speed.

Michael Jackson, 40, of Edgartown, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation, speeding and operating a motorcycle after sunset on a learner’s permit.

He was seriously injured in the crash and was transported by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. At press time yesterday his condition was unknown.

According to police, Mr. Jackson was traveling up-Island around 10:45 p.m. on his 2006 Buell motorcycle when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him. He got around the vehicle and back into his lane, and then rear-ended a Nissan Altima that was driving in front of the car he was attempting to pass.
