Last Saturday we received about two inches of rain and it wreaked havoc with outside events. Still, people were able to work outside on Sunday and perform a lot of chores and home improvements. The end of the shoulder season of transit service will be Oct. 12 and then we begin the winter bus schedule. Fall foliage should be spectacular as we have had a wet, very green season.

Five of our residents had a busy and rewarding weekend as their dogs competed in back-to-back dog shows in Falmouth last Saturday and Sunday, coming home with ribbons, titles, and immense satisfaction. Since retiring last year as a Search and Rescue dog, Karen Ogden’s Orion, an 11-year-old golden retriever, has taken up a new career in rally obedience. This weekend he earned his Rally Advanced title. On Saturday, Julia Humphrey’s golden, Xochi, won his rally novice title, and on Sunday, took the blue ribbon in the Novice A class with a score of 99 out of a possible 100. Katy Upson and Susanna Sturgis both made their rally debuts, Katy with Dundee, a Scottish terrier, and Susanna with Travvy, her year-and-a-half-old Alaskan malamute. Each team scored two qualifying rounds toward their rally novice titles. Nolan, a six-and-a-half-year-old Australian shepherd also owned by Karen Ogden, did likewise. Dianne Powers elegant Great Dane, Sailor, scored another point in his quest for an AKC championship. Sailor already has two legs toward his rally novice title. Willow, an Australian shepherd who practices regularly with the group, missed the fun because owner Eric Bates was sailing in Saturday’s Moffett Race.

Rally Obedience has become very popular in only eight years as a recognized canine sport. A rally course consists of between 10 and 20 exercises, depending on level: novice, advanced or excellent. Teams are judged not only on their ability to complete exercises correctly but also on the working relationship between dog and handler. It’s both challenging and fun. Karen, a certified pet dog trainer, has an introductory rally class starting tomorrow. For more information contact her at 508-693-3708.

Carl and Martha Tack of Waldron’s Bottom Road, report that the wedding of their daughter, Molly, to Ryan Hooper last Saturday afternoon was spectacular. Most of the guests ended up diving into the pond, led by the bride’s father and the groom’s mother!
