I don’t know how many people have noticed how short the days are getting. It is still dark at 6 a.m and it starts getting dark at 6 p.m. But the weather has been great. Lots of sun during the day and the rain has been holding off until the night.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Curtis Fournier, who celebrated Sept. 26; Ethan Creato, Brendan Donnelly, Joao Goncalves and Andres Sanchez, who all celebrated Sept. 27; Ellie Dolby, Ashley Pearlstein and Lucy Ulyatt, Sept. 28; Samantha Hargy Sept. 29; and to Bryan Alencar and Elijah Bridgestock-Montoya, who celebrated their day Oct. 1.

The beach gang celebrated another engagement. Melanie Rankow and her boyfriend/fiancé Nick Prescott got engaged over the summer. It was a very exciting and romantic weekend and we are all thrilled for both of them.

This past weekend Melanie’s parents, Norman and Margaret, hosted a cocktail party at Sharky’s, as Nicks parents were here from California. Nick’s parents, William and Sue Prescott, his sister Ashley Nichole, and his brother Mason were introduced to most of the friends and family of the Rankows.

Also here were Nick’s godparents, Julie and John, and their daughter Bailey. Melanie’s sister and brother in law, Angela and Ryan Welch, and their two children, Liam and Keira, came for the festivities. It was a great night for all and we are all now looking forward to the wedding which will be in June. Congratulation to both Nick and Melanie, and here is to a long and happy life together.

The Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs is holding a spaghetti dinner benefit this Saturday, Oct. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. for Pam Swan. Tickets can be bought in advance at the PA or at the event. The tickets are $15 for adults, and $7 for children. It is sponsored by the You’ve Got A Friend Fund at the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank.

Our thoughts are with Jack and Kim D’Arcy and their two young children who lost their home due to fire. As usual, the community is gathering around to help and donate clothes and whatever essentials the family needs. As of this time I have no information about where to donate to the family, but if you watch the papers I am sure there will be ads posted.

We are thrilled as our cousins Sonny and Cindy Laurent have arrived from Louisiana for the week. They are looking forward to some New England food, some fishing, visiting with friends and of course catching up with relatives.

I have been watching the buses in the town parking lot. There have been some big buses, many from the Midwest and South. I call them the Cadillac of buses as they look like there is a lot of room in them. I imagine they are probably very comfortable for long rides. So when Ralph and I were downtown on Wednesday I was chuckling to myself as I saw all the people from those buses roaming around.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
