The Saturday weather was delightful, but Sunday was a complete washout as we received nearly two inches of rain. An early sunset and cooler temperatures conjure memories of a September that slipped by before you knew it. Can Halloween be just 29 days away?

The Living Local Fall Festival begins tonight with a panel discussion at the Grange hall at 7:30 p.m. Then the scene shifts to the Agricultural Hall on Panhandle Road tomorrow morning with an opening ceremony with the Black Brook Singers. Children’s activities, pumpkin carving, feltmaking and more follow. The festival concludes with a community potluck dinner featuring live Island music. Please bring a dish that will feed six and your own cup, plate and utensils.

The 22nd annual Antique Power Show will take place in the new barn in the rear of the property. George Hartman is once again in charge of the show and promises that some newly restored steam engines will be on display from his collection. If you have any questions, please call him at 508-693-6039.

Julie Keefe proudly reports that her sons, Joe and Sebastian, of Los Angeles, Calif., one-third of the band Family of the Year ,have been chosen by conductor Keith Lockhart to open the Boston Pops concert at Symphony Hall tonight. Julie and Simone Desorcy went up to attend. Julie also said that Ben Smith is one of the soundmen; his father, Bart, has lived in town for several years.

Linda Baughman arrived last Sunday after spending the summer in Philadelphia, Pa. She is staying at Phyllis Meras’ house on Music street. Linda will be catching up with the news and visiting old friends. She enjoys fall activities and is looking forward to relaxing.

Jeanne Chinard, her husband Charlie Mullin, and dog Bert are visiting with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Chinard, and plan to stay for the month of October. Jeanne reports that their son, Jac, is now a junior at Princeton University.

James and Diane Pagnatti, of Old Forge, Pa., have been visiting with us for a week. They come back this time of year to celebrate their wedding anniversary. This is their fifth anniversary; James wanted something special, so they renewed their vows.

Andy Boass and his wife, Susie, of Hopkinton are at their house on Middle Road until Wednesday. Andy has been checking up on his beehives and harvesting honey. Susie has been busy completing her book on family genealogy. Her great-grandfather was Jerry Mayhew, and he once owned a substantial amount of land on Middle Road.

Jill Carlton and her husband Pete Karman of New Haven, Conn., made an unscheduled visit to the Island last weekend. They drove to New Bedford, took the fast ferry and the bus right to their door. Pete said it was very smooth and relaxing. They dined at Antonio’s in New Bedford before heading home. Jill wanted to visit with her brother Bruce, whom she had not seen in two years. Bruce was coming to visit and go fishing. Jill’s son Alex arrived the same day, and the guys did some serious fishing Sunday night.

Habitat for Humanity announces the closing sale for the 2009 Decorator Show House and Gardens at the Keniston house on the Main street of Edgartown. The sale will be held next Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items for sale are designer furnishings, Island art work, plants and shrubs and outdoor furniture.

Lorraine St. Pierre reports that there will be another harvest festival and luncheon next Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Federated Church Parish House in Edgartown. Their will be crafts, attic treasures, baked goods, drawings, stitchery, plants and fun for children. The luncheon includes chili, harvest soup and apple crisp.

Kym Cyr reports that a bake sale to benefit homeless animals will be held at Cronig’s Market in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If baking is your specialty, she would appreciate your participation; per order of the board of health all items must be individually wrapped and can be delivered from 9:30 to 11 a.m. the day of the sale. Susan Wilson reports that next Saturday at 5:30 p.m. the Martha¹s Vineyard Museum will welcome Frank Shirley for a presentation on the evolution of American residential architecture. A slideshow features stunning images of traditional architectural styles and details. Mr. Shirley led the restoration of the Corbin-Norton house on Ocean Park. For details, call 5 08-627-4441.
