An Island man was attacked by two assailants and stabbed in the neck with a putty knife on Main street,Vineyard Haven late Sunday evening.

Tisbury police have arrested two men in connection with the attack.

Roy J. Cavanaugh Jr., 47, was arrested early Monday morning and Richard Abrazinski of Edgartown, also 47, was arrested Wednesday morning.

Both have been charged with assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and mayhem.

Mr. Cavanaugh was arrested at the men’s residence of Vineyard House in Oak Bluffs, where he is living. Mr. Abrazinski was at large until he was arrested in Oak Bluffs Tuesday night.

According to police, Mr. Cavanaugh and Mr. Abrazinski went to the victim’s Main street apartment intending to attack him; the men reportedly had visited the victim’s home a week prior to the attack and threatened him.

Tisbury police were dispatched to the second-floor apartment at 30 Main street at 10:42 p.m.

When they arrived they found 24-year-old Jason Willoughby covered in blood holding the left side of his neck.

Mr. Willoughby was transported by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for treatment and later released.

After interviews with an eyewitness police later identified Mr. Cavanaugh and Mr. Abrazinski as the two attackers.

Both Mr. Cavanaugh and Mr. Abrazinski have extensive criminal records on the Vineyard, court records show.

Mr. Cavanaugh was arraigned in Edgartown district court Monday morning and is being held on $5,000 bail; Mr. Abrazinski was arraigned Wednesday morning and is being held on $30,000 bail.
