At the risk of reviving the battle of the sexes (did it ever really go away?) I must say that here comes another stupid idea from the boys. To my horror, they are literally going to shoot the moon. That’s right, fire a missile to see if there is any water there. How much of our tax money is this ridiculous idea going to cost? Why not work on purifying the water here? Funding universal health care? Ending hunger? Providing better education? If any one of you can show me proof that even one woman was involved on the panel that came up with this new scheme/scam, then lunch will be on me at a Vineyard Haven restaurant of your choice.

And here’s a bright idea from our state department of motor vehicles. Do you know we will no longer be sent a reminder of when our license is up? That’s a five-year memory to carry around; even doctors, dentists, vet clinics, and hair stylists call to remind you of an appointment made weeks or months ago. What’s up with this?

I have many events to report but no personal family news this week. Remember, please, to inform me of your guests, your achievements and your trips. So here goes with how you can spend the next week: If you haven’t signed up for CycleMV yet, you have until Saturday, Oct. 17 to get in shape. Call 508-627-7777 or visit cyclemarthasvineyard@gmail.com. Funds raised by this Rotary Club event will help many Island organizations.

New bride Louisa Gould is hosting a talk at her gallery on Main street tonight by abstract artist Roberta Gross. The fun starts at 5 p.m., there will be a question and answer session, and you may view the show, Abstraction II. The doors to the gallery hardly ever close; on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. accomplished Vineyard poets will read at the gallery in conjunction with the Massachusetts Poetry Festival. All are invited.

The American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive on Tuesday at the PA Club in Oak Bluffs from 1:30 to 7 p.m. I’ll see you there.

Join me Tuesday night at our library at 7 p.m. for a talk by William Bruno on his book, The King Rat and His Court: Lessons in Corporate Greed. Mr. Bruno reports on how unethical people achieve positions of power.

I’m giving you long notice for the first Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network event at the Baylies Room in the Old Whaling Church on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Sponsors would like you to RSVP by Oct. 16. Members attend for $15; nonmembers are admitted for $25. A light lunch and beverages will be served while Michael Davis, bestselling author of a book on the Sesame Street gang, talks about social networking at work. You may pay online at mvwomensnetwork.org or drop off a check at Ameriprise Financial in Edgartown or Kiddo’s in Vineyard Haven.

The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living, formerly the council on aging, invites all board members and directors to their annual meeting at the Tisbury Senior Center on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Please attend; there will be an election of officers.

Heads up for next Friday, Oct. 16. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is staging the Martha’s Vineyard Food and Wine Festival, with many of our best chefs present. The party starts at the museum, located at 59 School street, at 5:30 p.m. All proceeds benefit the museum. There will be an auction of two extraordinary trips, one a getaway to California wine country, the other a yachting day with friends around Edgartown on the Harbor View Hotel’s picnic party yacht. You may begin your bidding early on line at mvmuseum.org, or call 508-627-4441 for reservations and information.

Get well bouquets go out to my cousin and godmother, Frances Graziani.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend.

Anniversary wishes go to Chuck and Carolyn Redington on Oct. 10.

Belated birthday greetings go out to one of my faves, Jack LaLanne, who turned 95 on Oct. 7. Jack celebrated by doing 95 pushups and 95 jumping jacks.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Jesse Evan Klein Jacobs, Donna Rhoades and Sarah LaPiana today. Tomorrow is claimed by Rob Laffie. Oct. 11 is a party for Caitlin Crossland, Kristin Siple, Mardell Francis and Kenon Veno. Oct. 12 honors Jaime Conroy, Arvi Bahal and Sabrina Flipse. Oct. 13 sees John Sylvia, Vania Ruas and Marcos Arado age gracefully. Oct. 14 is for Amaru Pareja. And on Oct. 15 Lu Healey takes the cake. Many happy returns.
