Social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube, have become household terms. And everybody seems to have their own blog these days. But despite the fact that everyone from age one to 100 seems to have joined the digital revolution, using it to effectively promote products and businesses is not yet common knowledge.

Fortunately, the Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network is offering a program on Oct. 20 called Social Networking at Work: How One Author Created a Bestselling Book. Michael Davis, author of New York Times best-seller, Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street, will speak on how he uses social networking to promote and sell his book.

Mr. Davis, a former editor of TV Guide, published the book last year as Sesame Street entered its 40th year. Because his publisher’s public relations dollars were limited, Mr. Davis created his own marketing plan. Along the way, he discovered the wonders and pitfalls of social networking.

Bunch of Grapes will sponsor the event, and Mr. Davis will sign copies of Street Gang at the end of his presentation, to be held in the Baylies Room of the Old Whaling Church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with a light lunch provided. Cost is $15 for women’s network members who preregister by Oct. 16, and $25 for non-members and walk-ins.
