A small stretch of Lambert’s Cove Road in West Tisbury will be closed to motorists for two weeks beginning Nov. 2 to repair a portion of the roadway as well as the bridge over Blackwater Brook near the town beach parking lot, highway superintendent Richard Olsen told selectmen last week.

The work will be done by Edgartown contractor David Knauf, who submitted the low bid of $21,185 earlier this year. Although the bridge is structurally sound, the retaining walls have been pushed out by constant use, causing a dip in the road.

A stone culvert under the bridge dating back to the 1800s also will need to be repaired, Mr. Olsen said.

Approximately 100 feet of Lambert’s Cove Road will be closed to traffic while the work proceeds.

Selectmen agreed to put up signs at both the upper and lower entrances to the road alerting motorists the road is no longer a through way. The town will also publish ads in Island newspapers and alert the Vineyard Transit Authority.

Mr. Olsen said he also talked to the West Tisbury police department about stationing police details on the road to direct traffic. Schools will also be notified so school busses can be rerouted.
