The Massachusetts Society of Genealogists (MSOG) met community members on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. The newly founded and formed Martha’s Vineyard chapter will meet each month at the Vineyard Haven library with guest speakers, and to assist those in the active pursuit of documenting their ancestry and their family histories. We can be proud that Massachusetts led the nation in being the first state to require certified and documented vital records, which extend all the way back to 1841. Many states did not require these vital records until the early 1900s. Dues are $25 per year and assistance is always available for new members. Even if you are just beginning to document your family genealogy, this group will be there to assist you and to give you guidance along the way. We are seeking more members to join, and please feel free to contact any one of our newly elected officers: Marna Waller, president; Mary Jane Carpenter, vice-president; Patricia Johnson, treasurer; Ann Bassett, membership secretary, and yours truly as secretary. You may also speak with Cecily Greenaway at the Vineyard Haven library who assisted in formalizing the plans for this vital group.

Congratulations to Cameron Cuch and his bride Marilyn who were married on Oct. 17 in Aquinnah.
