Bee Eaters to Play Katharine Cornell

The music of The Bee Eaters, a foursome of young musicians playing at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8 p.m., can be traced back to the traditions of bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, jazz and pop. The quartet combines the striking tones of hammered dulcimer player Simon Chrisman, banjoist Wes Corbett and the brother-sister fiddle duo Tristan and Tashina Clarridge. Mr. Clarridge is a five-time Grand National Fiddle Champion, while his sister received the same award in 2005 and has performed at Carnegie Hall as part of MacArthur Fellow/Grammy-winning bassist Edgar Meyer’s Young Artists program. Since taking up the banjo at age 16, the 22-year-old Mr. Corbett has toured internationally with The Biscuit Burners and appeared with the David Grisman Quintet, and is currently touring with Joy Kills Sorrow. His longtime musical collaborator, dulcimer player Simon Chrisman, was a scholarship guest artist at the Augusta Heritage Festival in West Virginia at the young age of 16. His sophisticated rhythmic sense and tonal flexibility on an instrument generally considered to be quite limited, has created a buzz among musicians all over the world. The result of the foursome’s collaboration is an elegant fusion of tradition and innovation, right at the forefront of the emerging New Acoustic music scene.
