Now That I’m Dead, I Decided to Write this Book! Yes, that’s the title of Dr. Muriel Menaker Gerhard’s new book. Muriel, not to be confused with her daughter, Dr. Michelle Gerhard Jasny, one of our Island’s top veterinarians, has just published this great read, available through the Web site booksurge.com. Energy runs in this family like Niagara Falls. Muriel has been my friend for years on Martha’s Vineyard; she also lives in Norwalk, Conn. Follow her story from the lower east side of Manhattan, through the pushcarts of Hester and Orchard streets, the teaching jungle of Brooklyn public schools, to the suburbs of Connecticut. I was up reading all night, and you will be, too. Mazel tov, Muriel!

The Rotary Club’s first CycleMV fundraiser was a huge success last Saturday, fortuitously placed between our two nor’easters. Approximately 75 avid cyclists participated to raise funds for Island charities. Same time, next year.

Richard Paradise has not taken a break since the successful international film festival on Island. Join me tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Katharine Cornell Theatre for Seraphine, in French with English subtitles. This is a true story of a simple and devout housekeeper who began a fabulous painting career at age 41. Still hope for the rest of us. The film has won seven César awards, the French equivalent to our Oscars. For more information call Richard at 774-392-2972 or visit online mvfs.com.

I am sure you have noticed by now the always creative, forever fun, now 10th annual Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School scarecrow displays downtown. What will these talented kids think of next? A welcome sight as the weather changes and the days shorten. Call Paul Karasik, 508-293-4089 for details.

Zephrus plays such a big part in our community and our hearts. Did you know the restaurant has a year-round plan for nonprofits on Island to raise money? Your group need only pick a winter date, no tickets or other fundraising, and just publicize and Zephrus shares 20 per cent of their evening’s special menu with your organization. Zephrus donates proceeds from their American as Apple Pie dessert program to the Island Food Pantry. Call Susan Goldstein at 508-693-2200, extension 102, for information to get your group on board.

There is a must-go meeting at our library on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Plans are being discussed for the new emergency services facility to be located on West Spring street, across from the Tisbury School. Come hear firefighter Joe Tierney, fire chief John Schilling, and EMT Jeff Pratt talk about plans and options. The new plan will come to a vote at town meeting on Nov. 17.

Another meeting I will be attending takes place Thursday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at our Tisbury Senior Center. Attorney Arthur Bergeron will present the second in his series of free legal clinics. A light dinner will be served; chow will be ready by 5:15 p.m. if you show up early. The subject of his talk is Probate: What It Is, What It Costs, and How to Avoid It. The center considers it helpful to call and reserve a spot, no fee involved: 508-696-4205. I’ll see you there.

As always, bingo is played Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion Hall on Martin road. You don’t need to be a legionnaire to attend, and volunteers are welcome to keep this program going. A great game for winter evenings.

Anniversary bouquets go out on Oct. 27 for Al and Flo Koster’s 53rd. On Oct. 28 Gilbert and Barbara Silvia celebrate many years of wedded bliss.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Scott Moorefield and Martha Abigail Kent Holmes today. Tomorrow is a party for Kim Glodis Martin, Steven Lampart, and Lil’Bit and Silvio Gardella turn five! Oct. 25 honors Tom Snow, Sean DeBettencourt and Dolly Campbell. Oct. 26 is for Max Eagan and Heidi Smith. Oct. 27 belongs to Fernando Almeida and Keissila Cecilio. Oct. 28 is claimed by John Rancourt, Shawna Amaral and Corliss Maciel. And on Oct. 29 Lil Colligan and Jim Norton Sr. take the cake. Many happy returns.
