Last weekend was a beautiful weekend. Lots of scallopers on the ponds, people putting their gardens to bed, people taking walks, and others just spending time with their families.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Dunovan Belisle, who celebrated Oct. 26, Gabriella Carlos, Oct. 27, and to Joshua Brown, who will celebrate his day Oct. 31.

All Island artisans and bakers are invited to contribute to the holiday fundraiser for Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, the Handmade from the Heart Bazaar. The one day event will be at the Daniel Fisher House during the Christmas in Edgartown weekend on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hospice is seeking any unique handmade gifts, including jewelry, needlepoint, knitted items, paintings, photos, cards, toys, cakes, candies, cookies, ornaments, pies, jams, jellies, whatever. If you wish to donate items for the event, someone will pick them up or they can be dropped off at the office. Anyone interested in donating to Handmade from the Heart, please call 508-693-0189.

We are happy to see Glen Searle back and around town. Glen was in Mass General for a few days not too long ago and he is better. He would like to thank the community for their support and prayers.

Trick or treat! Enjoy safe Halloween trick or treating at the Federated Church Parish House in Edgartown on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Federated Church, 45 South Summer street. The Federated Church youth group will be meeting for a movie and popcorn on Sunday, Nov. 1 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., same place.

Don’t forget after you go there, or before, to stop at the fire station for some tricks and treats. Word has it they have something for children of all ages.

Janet Hathaway and her son Ross have returned from Montclair, N.J., where they spent time with daughter and Ross’s sister Ashley Alexander and her six-month-old son, Nigel Ross. Janet said they had a great time just spending time with the family and shopping for her new grandson.

Friday is Paul Coughlin’s last day working at the post office. He is retiring after over 34 years of service. So if you have a chance, stop by and say hi and goodbye. Thank you, Paul, for all your years of service.

Last weekend Tony and Erika Bettencourt and their daughters Kassidy, Megan and Annie all traveled to Boston to do the Step Out Walk for Diabetes at the Boston Commons. The event raised $275,000 for the fight for a cure. Annie, who was diagnosed with type one diabetes last year, raised enough money, thanks to her many sponsors, to come in the top 15 fund-raising teams out of 3,000 people.

Have a safe Halloween and keep your eyes open for the ghost, and goblins in your neighborhood. Don’t forget the downtown trick or treat at the stores from noon to 3 p.m., then the PTO Halloween party at the Edgartown School which starts at 4 p.m.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
