Well, we had another weekend that was not too bad but we received of a lot of rain and wind Saturday night. Over in North Tisbury John Hoff reports that his Middletown Nursery will be closing for the winter on Monday and Fiddlehead Farm closed last week. Garcia’s Deli and Bakery is scheduled to close on Sunday.

Tomorrow night we celebrate Halloween. Its origin comes from an ancient Celtic festival that was at least 2,000 years old. The American tradition of trick or treating dates back to the early All Souls’ Day parades in England. Poor people would beg for food and were given pastries called soul cakes. By the 1920s’ Halloween had become a community holiday with parades and town-wide parties. Today we spend an estimated $6.9 billion on the holiday annually, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday.

The annual Halloween party sponsored by West Tisbury park and recreation committee will be held tomorrow night from 6 till 8 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall. There will be refreshments, games, costume parade and maybe a spooky hayride. For further information please call 508-696-0147.

Nelia Decker over at the library reports that town children are invited tomorrow from 3 till 5 p.m. to the library Halloween party. There will be games, snacks and hayrides. So come in a costume and have a good time.

It will be an early trick on you if you don’t remember that at two o’clock Monday morning we will return to Eastern Standard Time. So turn your clocks back Sunday night before retiring for the evening. We will gain an hour of sleep overnight, that will be considered a treat for many, but the flip side of that benefit is that the sun will be setting at about five o’clock.

When you are in or near the woods these days remember that the archery season for deer is into its second week. John Varconda, manager of the Manuel Correllus State Forest, would like to remind people who enter the forest to wear bright colored clothing to be on the safe side. Be extra careful when driving, as deer are apt to cross the road day or night at one of their favorite crossings.

Jim Graham, of Pond Road, hosted a Vineyard dinner at the famous Acme Oyster House in New Orleans, La. recently. Scott Larsen, Nick Lehwald, and Molly Grand-Jean joined their friend Jesse Greenstein and Jim. Jesse, a junior at Tulane, visited the Gunnery where Jim works. Scott, Nick and Molly are on a round the country tour having visited Baltimore and the Carolinas before meeting up with Jesse in New Orleans. All four of them worked this summer at Larsen’s in Menemsha and they were glad to go to an oyster house where they weren’t the ones shucking for a change.

She was accompanied by Dr. Jay Segel and his office manager, Margo Wright. They attended meetings, lectures, workshops and visited with many exhibitors who represent shoe, orthotic, and other ankle and foot related products. They all had dinner at the classic Hill Top Steak House in Saugus which they enjoyed. Kathy likes her work at Dr. Segel’s office as podiatric assistant and is adding to her skill set and training with ultrasound and other techniques. She enjoys the time spent with patients and seeing their relief and progress with their foot problems. Natalie Thibodeau also works at the office on Pond Road and all together they have a wonderful team approach to helping patients.

Phyllis Meras, of Music street, was mighty disappointed in her fellow man on Sunday. After purchasing her Sunday papers she left them in her driveway and continued her usual morning constitutional. She was mighty disappointed to return to find her papers missing. She said she could expect that in the summer but certainly not in October.
