Carolee Stewart, a 1968 graduate of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, received the Hall of Fame Alumni Award from the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance on Sept. 25.

Ms. Stewart began her teaching career in the Freetown-Lakeville regional schools, where she taught for 14 years. She received her Ph.D. in music education from the University of Michigan in 1991 and then taught in the music education division of the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University for 10 years prior to her appointment as dean of Peabody’s Preparatory Division in 2001. In that capacity she has developed numerous partnerships and collaborations with various Baltimore area organizations, including one with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra that improved its educational offerings. She strengthened and expanded the music teacher mentor program, in which Baltimore city music teachers receive support from preparatory division faculty members, and increased music and dance education offerings for adult learners.

She holds Orff-Schulwerk certification from the New England Conservatory in Boston and the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria, where she has taught; she has provided national leadership as president of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. As a recorder player and vocalist, she has performed with music ensembles in the United States and Austria.
