It’s a good year for scalloping in Edgartown — so good that the town selectmen agreed Monday to increase the commercial scallop limit from three to four struck 10-gallon wash baskets.

In a letter to the selectmen, shellfish constable Paul Bagnell wrote: “The first limits are still being landed by 9 a.m., which indicates a good amount still left in the pond . . . this represents the first rise in the limit of bay scallops in over 10 years.”

The new limit went into effect yesterday. It coincides with an increase in the price of scallops last week.

“This is great news, that we have a lot of scallops,” said chairman Michael J. Donaroma.

In other business, following the resignation of Alison D. Cannon from the Edgartown planning board, selectmen and planning board members agreed to appoint Mike McCourt to serve as an interim member. Mr. McCourt, who is the manager of Murdick’s Fudge, will serve until the annual town election in April.
