A former West Tisbury school teacher accused of providing alcohol and pornographic materials to former students and hosting underage drinking parties at his home was found guilty on 10 felony charges this week following a two-day trial in Edgartown district court.

Daniel K. Johnson, 43, a former industrial arts teacher at the West Tisbury School and emergency medical technician, was found guilty on 10 of 13 charges, including assault and battery, providing alcohol to minors and providing obscene materials to minors. The finding was issued by Judge Joseph I. Macy following a jury-waived trial.

Mr. Johnson was arrested last December by Tisbury police after a father reported that he suspected Mr. Johnson had provided his son with alcohol.

The investigation by Tisbury police chief Dan Hanavan, who was a patrolman at the time, led to affidavits from several of Mr. Johnson’s former students, who reported that he routinely purchased them alcohol and hosted underage drinking parties at his home on Mariner’s Road. A total of 12 former students testified during the trial this week.

Cape and Islands assistant district attorney Laura Marshard established during the trial that Mr. Johnson provided former students with alcohol at his home or would deliver them alcohol if they called him on the phone.

“Testimony from several witnesses indicated a clear pattern that [Mr. Johnson] was providing alcohol to young people,” Ms. Marshard told the Gazette. “His house was a place where they could drink alcohol without fear of repercussions from parents or authorities.”

Mr. Johnson requested a trial without a jury. He was defended by his attorney, Paul Andrews.

Judge Macy threw out a single charge of providing alcohol to a teenage girl, and the trial continued on the other charges.

The judge found Mr. Johnson not guilty on single charges of providing alcohol to a minor and providing obscene materials to a minor; on all other charges he was found guilty.

Bail was revoked and Mr. Johnson was taken into custody and transported to the Edgartown house of correction. Sentencing is set for Jan. 22.
