A fire last Friday morning destroyed a one-bedroom home in West Tisbury and sent one young person to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. All three occupants of 123 Charles Neck Way were home when the fire broke out at around 2 a.m.

West Tisbury fire chief Manuel Estrella said the volunteer fire department first got the call at 2:26 a.m. and rushed to the scene to find the 480-square foot structure completely engulfed in flames and all three occupants outside of the house. About 30 volunteer firefighters responded to the call, including 16 from West Tisbury.

The Edgartown fire department provided a tanker truck that was used to transport water from the Martha’s Vineyard Airport to the scene of the fire, Chief Estrella said.

He declined to identify the residents, believed to be renters.

He said one was injured in the blaze and was transported by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and later airlifted to a Boston hospital. The person has since been released, the chief said.

Firefighters stayed on the scene until about 4:30 a.m. The state fire marshal visited the Island Tuesday afternoon to inspect the scene of the fire.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” the chief said.
