Naughty, naughty! Some of you have been throwing things in with your recycling that don’t belong there. I trust it was not intentional, but ignorance is neither bliss nor friendly to the environment. If you are not sure, ask the dump czar when you go there, or inquire at the office. As far as I could tell, when I checked with Fred LaPiana and we were both sick with colds, magazines and newspapers are accepted together, tied or in paper bags. The day I went George said no more bags, put them in loose, and handed me back the bag. The next time I went, Patrick said bags are now okay again. Cardboard is not corrugated board; corrugated board is accepted. I’m not sure if the new trash hauler at the dump, Bruno’s, has put in these requests or it is town decision. Perhaps we could get a friendly reminder published in the papers?

Note to my mother, who has crossed the drawbridge for two summers now and called it “the Forever Bridge.” It is no longer forever, it is done. Of course, that is just the temporary bridge until the old one is rebuilt.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum, at 59 School street in Edgartown, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. They have a special exhibit up: Those Who Serve: Martha’s Vineyard and World War II.”They also want you to know that the Rhode Island PBS station WSBE has been presenting a Ken Burns and Lynn Novick (and you know how good they are) documentary series about the war that airs on Sundays at 2 p.m. In addition, every Monday night at 9 p.m. the same channel presents a series of one-hour documentaries on World War II. For a complete description of these programs and to learn more about our museum, visit online mvmuseum.org.

If it’s January it must be chili. The annual best chili contest will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the P.A. Club. I hear the tickets are almost all sold out! This party benefits our Red Stocking Fund. I think it’s now more difficult to get these tickets than ones for a Stones concert. Good luck.

It is not too cold to look forward to next summer’s garden. The first meeting of this new year of the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will be on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Wakeman Center. Members are admitted free, interested nonmembers get in for $5. The speaker will be Laura Coit talking on Learning About Life While Designing A Border. All are invited. If you have any questions call 508-693-5334.

Gardening too soon? How about kindergarten registration? I almost fell off my chair when this e-mail came in, but it is approaching quickly. Tisbury School secretary par excellence, Barbara Armstrong, sent me a note. If your child will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2010, now is the time to call Barbara at 508-696-6500 to request a preregistration packet. Registration will be held on Friday, April 2.

Our library is having its monthly book and video sale tomorrow from 1 to 3 p.m. The choices are always interesting and the proceeds benefit library programs. I’ll see you there.

Our condolences go out to Red Ward and his family on the death of Jean last Friday. What a kind and wonderful woman!

Get well wishes go out to Barbara Silvia.
