It was my good fortune to have known Steve Crampton for many years — to have had a chance to see him up close with his family, as a leader in his profession and in the community and as someone who loved and excelled in many sports. He was a true friend; I greatly enjoyed being with him and I had the greatest respect for his advice and counsel.

Anyone who knew him well was aware of the incredibly close relationship between Steve and his wonderful wife Susan. Whether on bike trips, playing tennis or being with family and friends, Steve and Susan Crampton were the quintessential team.

Many of us on the Vineyard had the opportunity recently to observe Steve’s strong and principled leadership as president of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation during an unfortunate land care episode.

In some legal work that Steve helped me with years ago in connection with some Vermont property, his innate fairness and evenhandedness were clear.

Whether during his active and full life or during his last battle against cancer, Steve Crampton showed himself to be a warrior. His beloved wife and partner Susan has been, and remains, just as valiant.

Steve Crampton’s values and high ethical standards were evident in whatever he did. I have the temerity to describe him with a phrase so rarely used as to seem almost old-fashioned: a virtuous man.
