Thank you, gentle readers, who are so thoughtful to inquire about my health every time I miss a deadline.

I’m fine. But was up to my ears in preparation last week for the trip across the Big Water, first time off-Island in a year to visit my mother and help her out. She is fine and still teaching Italian, but our tenant here in the duplex retired and moved so I am supervising the paint job. Well, apparently, that’s not all I am supervising. I arrived on Sunday afternoon. Monday night Iole and I were waiting for the Other Nancy Gardella (my sister in law, not Chamber of Commerce Nancy G) to bring the wine and start the party. I heard the tenant’s side detector go off. I ran over to the apartment, saw it was the carbon monoxide, called 911 and crated all the dogs and secured the cat because they don’t like strangers, even if those strangers are there to save their furry little lives. Sure enough, Nancy arrived with the wine and five handsome firefighters right behind her. There was also one gorgeous police officer, sirens, the big truck, the whole enchilada. The men worked quickly and efficiently, blew the bad air out of the apartment, checked the readings in all the rooms, made recommendations, and we chatted about all the retired White Plains firefighters I know on Martha’s Vineyard who now spend their time fishing. I want to thank Firefighters Sigoni, Ferreirari, DiSunoli, as well as the others whose names I did not get and the police officer. Iole and I dodged another bullet, and we are eternally grateful.

There’s a new star in the midwest! Joan Glodis of Wilson, N.C., formerly of Our Town, is pleased and proud to announce the birth of her new granddaughter, Maddox Anne Tenbrook, born Jan. 11 this year. Maddox wighed in at 7 lbs., 12 oz, and is 20.25 inches long. She was born at 8:51 a.m. Her mom is Abby Glodis Tenbrook, who grew up here and wants to share the news with all her Island friends. Dad is John Tenbrook, and the family resides in Beechwood, Ohio. Big brother Ari is enjoying his new role immensely. Joan says hi to all her Island friends and misses us as we miss her. Love to all the family.
