We send condolences to the many friends and family of Eric Cottle of Menemsha who died last week. He was a lifelong resident of town and a fisherman for most of those years. He had a wealth of knowledge about the earlier fishermen and townspeople and their adventures. Everyone always enjoyed conversations with Eric that were filled with humor and recollections. We will all miss him and all that he represented of those earlier days. His wife of 70 years, Marguerite Bassett Cottle, and his son, Wesley, and daughter, Martha, survive him. Services were at the Abel’s Hill Cemetery on Thursday with a reception following at the Chilmark Community Church.

Chilmark is enjoying a spell of real spring weather, and the only reminder of the heavy rains of last week are the puddles still standing in unexpected places all around town. I guess we should be grateful for all that rain. I remember listening to Kent Healy talk to us about the water source for the Vineyard. Some in the group wondered about the myth that says we get our water from some mysterious underground river coming from New Hampshire. Kent was firm in his denial of that folktale and impressed upon us that our only source of water is rain!

My weatherman from Stonewall Pond, Bob Conway, says he has more evidence of global warming. According to his records, his daffodils bloomed four days earlier this year than last! This year they bloomed on the April 4, and last year on April 8.

Chilmark friends send get well wishes to Jules Worthington, whose return to his Chilmark home has been delayed because of illness. He is undergoing treatment in Florida and his wife, Judy, who is with him, sends word that he seems improved. We are all hoping to see him here soon.

Ted and Judy Mayhew and Emmett and Kathie Carroll are home from their annual winter vacation in the Florida Keys. We know they had a grand time and saw many friends while there.

Sue Larsen continues to train for the Avon Walk for Cancer in Boston May 15 and 16. She is striving to make her goal of walking 750 miles in training and raising $10,000 in donations. We hope she is nearing both goals with four weeks to go. Breast cancer knows no limits and recently invaded a relative of mine who is near 85 years old. She is happy that she has continued her yearly checkups. Early detection is the only cure so far. Let’s support research for a better cure.
