Nonna and I went to 5:30 p.m. Mass at the parish church of my childhood, St.Bernard’s, last Saturday and followed it up with attending the annual pasta dinner at Chapel Hall. Jim Briggs was a most excellent chef and the young staff were good-looking and efficient. We were graced with having Father Robert Morris and Father Louis Reddy at our table. Also sitting with us were the Kuhlmans and the Courtneys. Dolores Cardin stopped me and reminded me that I had babysat for her children back in the day. Margaret Cherico said hi to Mom and reminded her that Iole had played the organ at her wedding 50 years ago. The dessert table was to die for. Same time, next year.

The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 20 at 1 p.m. at the Wakeman Center off Lambert’s Cove Road in Tisbury. The topic for this month’s program is Integrating Perennials in Your Landscape. Peggy Schwier will give the talk. A hospitality hour with refreshments will follow the program. All persons interested in horticulture, home gardening, flower arranging and preserving the best qualities of the Island environment are welcome. Guests are admitted for $5, members are free. For more, call 508-693-5334.

After you learn about gardening, you may attend a cooking workshop, the Yoga of Food, at our library on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. MJ Bindu Delekta from the Sacred Circle of Yoga Studio will lead the program. All are welcome and the lecture is free. Call program director Betty Burton at 508-696-4211, extension 16 with any questions.

The children’s room of the library is presenting Olivia the Pig on that very same day at 10 a.m. for the wee ones and 11 a.m. for the three-to-five set. Olivia is a life-size story character who will lead songs, stories and lots of fun. Kids must be accompanied by a grownup, so you will enjoy it, too!

As we do monthly, the library is having a mini book sale from noon to 3 p.m. this Saturday, April 17. The sale helps the Friends of the Library run their programs. However, Amy Ryan has asked that you do not put donations of books in the book drop. Please bring them to the front desk during regular hours. This would be very helpful to the staff.

Signs of summer to come: Jan Buhrman’s son went swimming in Vineyard Haven harbor on April 9!

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Jenny Painter and Evan Rogers today. Tomorrow honors Irene Miller. April 18 is a party for Max Clark Balco, Nate Lee, Lynne Whiting, Alexander Schultz and Laurie Jennings. April 19 is for Bob Tankard, Eleanor Hebert, Carter Lee and Mary Marshall. April 20 is BJ Kennedy’s Airplane Day. April 21 is shared by John Custer and Judy Nichols. And on April 22, Doug and Andy Kaufman take the cake. Many happy returns.
