Here we are in spring and the sun is shining and the temperatures are in the 50s. I know it does not sound that warm, but try to remember when it is 70 here in the summer, it is 80 degrees and much hotter off island.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Sophia Grazioso and Kenneth Hatt, who celebrated their day April 17; Kamaree Egarr-Harris, April 19; Travis Viera, April 21; Kyle Boyd, April 22; and to Rebeca Lima, who celebrated her day today, April 23.

Congratulations to Leah (Phillips) and Joe D’Amato on the birth of their twin daughters, Mallory Priscilla D’Amato (3 pounds, 6 ounces) and Madeline Rose D’Amato (4 pounds, 11 ounces), on April 20, 2010 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. They were born on their great-grandparents’ George and Priscilla Magnuson’s 61st wedding anniversary! Leah has been in the hospital for nearly five weeks, so their delivery was very special.

Grandparents are Barbara (Magnuson) Phillips of Edgartown and Leslie Phillips of Oak Bluffs, and Linda and Joseph D’Amato of Saugus.

Jamie Murray was the guest of honor at a baby shower held for her at the home of Paula Smith. It was a great time, and it was a sort of reunion of the beach ladies. Jamie and her husband, Ian, are expecting their first child in June. Allison Smith was the gracious hostess and served many of her appetizer specialties. It was also great to see Allison’s mom, Barbara, here from Connecticut.

I had the best surprise this week when I was working. This car pulled up and the driver was waving at me. As I was trying to figure out who she was, she got out of the car and said, “Hi, it’s Heidi.” Well, I know several Heidis and could not figure this one out until she said, “My father told me to come visit you.” It was Heidi Schule-Taylor, who is the daughter of Rev. John Schule.

Heidi and I worked together at the old Dairy Queen when it was in the lot next to the A& P, which is now the Stop & Shop parking lot. We had so much fun there with Dick and Caroline Brown. We also worked with young George Goulart, Bonnie Deitz and Patti Kerns. We all got along so well, and we got into some playful trouble once in a while. It was great to talk about those times, seeing who could make Buster Bars faster or who made the best Peanut Buster Parfait. Of course they involved peanuts, and there were many times the peanuts didn’t make it in the cups and we would end up in a friendly peanut fight, but we all suffered later when it was time to clean up for the night.

Our sympathies go out to the Paul Jackson family for the loss of their wife and mother, Mary. As many people have said over the past week, Mary was one of those people whom once you met her, you never forgot her. Her talents were endless and her family was number one to her. We will miss her wit and of course her special garden on the Edgartown Road, where she sold the flowers on the honor system. She will be missed by many.
