The cherry trees are in full bloom, the apple trees are about to burst in their beautiful colors, and Mother Nature decided to turn the temperature down and turn on the fan. But it is promising to be a great weekend, and the temperature is supposed to be in the 70s so let’s hope for the best.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Alexandra Habekost, Caroline Hurley and Ana Ribeiro, who all celebrated their day on April 25.

Happy birthday wishes go out to Wayne Jackson for April 28, and Holly Mercier, Marilda Hollister and Priscilla Bettencourt, who all celebrated their day on April 29.

It is a month for family birthdays. Happy birthday to Sophia Grazioso, who celebrated her day on April 17, and to her dad, Christopher E. Grazioso, who celebrated his day April 21.

Special wishes to Sara Gamble-Graves, who celebrated her day April 25, to her daughter Ava, who celebrated her first birthday on April 12, and to Mom/Grandma Susan Gamble, who celebrated her day on April 19.

Then big birthday wishes to the Cavallo family, with Jonas celebrating his day on April 26, father Coo on April 27, and to mom Donna, who celebrated her day on April 28.

Happy anniversary to Jim and Mary Ellen Kresel, who celebrated their 40th anniversary on April 19. The Kresels celebrated their day by flying to Chicago to be with her daughter Sue and husband, Jonathan, and of course the grandsons, Ari and Ben. The Kresels flew out on Saturday afternoon not knowing that their son Joshua had flown out that morning as a surprise. So when they arrived at the airport, they were greeted by Sue, Jon and Ari, but Ben was nowhere to be found. Mary Ellen was a little suspicious, and she knew Ben could not be too far away; his parents would never let him out of their sight. So they went into the museum at the airport and there was Ben and Uncle Josh crouched in the corner, much to the Kresels’ surprise.

Sue prepared a wonderful brunch for the family, and the anniversary couple was presented with many cards from friends and family. Sue had sent out invitations the month before so that the cards could be mailed to her home and then be presented on the actual date. It was a great week for all. Jonathan Kresel and his fiancée, Courtney, could not be present as Jon had Guard duty that weekend.

Alice Upham and Laurel Anne Zettl, both of Edgartown, will once again be cochairs of the St. Andrew’s Church May Breakfast fundraiser: mark your calendars for next Friday, May 7, from 7 to 9 a.m. at the parish hall, located at the corner of Winter and North Summer streets in Edgartown.

This fundraiser has been hosted by the Women’s Guild of St. Andrew’s for over 50 years! It’s a time to gather with family, friends and coworkers to celebrate the arrival of spring and love for our Island community by sharing in a homestyle country breakfast with 100 per cent of proceeds to benefit Island charities. The cost is $8 for adults, and children under six are free. The event will also feature Papa Tuck filming his show Cooking with Papa Tuck, which will later air on MVTV, channel 13. Special guest Alan Ganapol will provide live music. Farm fresh eggs will be generously donated by Morning Glory Farm. It’s a wonderful way to start the day and help those in need! Tickets are available at the door, or by calling 508-627-5330.

The nursery is slowly but surely filling up with flowers. A lot of the plants are coming out from the back to the front houses, to be hardened to go outside. There are some that are ready, and the vegetables are coming out. However, I have to warn people that some plants should only be planted if you have a way to cover them on cold nights. The last day of frost threat is usually May 15, but as we all know, we have seen some frost in June here. You can put them out during the day, but bring them in on the cold nights.

Also mark your calendars for May 7, as word has it that it will be Pink and Green Night at Donaroma’s. Usually it is Mother’s Day, but it will be on the Friday night, in the form of a champagne party to celebrate moms. It sounds like a fun night, and if you wear your pink and green you will be eligible for a great prize.

Welcome home to Marge and Huck Look, who are back from their winter in Florida. It is so nice to look out and see lights on at their home.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
