We had a mixed bag of weather over the weekend. Saturday was great but it went downhill after that with rain and lower than average temperatures. It will be, we understand, improving this weekend. Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican Independence Day, is celebrated on Wednesday.

The Chilmark Community Center hosted Camp Safe Haven with a talent show and dinner provided by Marc Hanover of Linda Jean’s served by Vineyard Harley Riders members last Friday.

Angela Grant, transit authority administrator, reports that the VTA bus schedule will be gradually changing to the summer shoulder season beginning tomorrow. There will be extended service on Fridays and Saturdays until Memorial Day weekend when service will include Sundays. The passenger count has increased in the last three months during the winter schedule. New schedules are available at most businesses in town and contain a wide range of regional transit information and a new system map.

Tracy and Matthew Day, of Bethel, Conn., and their three children, Jackson, Garrett and Caroline, visited Matthew’s parents, Bob and Barbara Day of Willow Tree Hollow over the children’s school vacation.

Sir Brook Zern and his wife, Kristen, of South Vine returned home last Tuesday after spending a couple of months at their villa in Spain. Their return was delayed because of the air traffic delays caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Bob Luskin of Edgartown Road returned last week after spending the winter in Atlanta, Ga., with his wife, Charlotte, and her family.

Geoff McCullough, his wife, Signe, and their children, Geoff Jr., Nellie, Louisa, Henry, a friend Molly and their livestock, all from Hingham, spent the weekend at his parent’s house on Music street. They had great weather and Henry reports they had a swell weekend. Geoff made a mistake just before they left town on Sunday; he put the dirty laundry in with the garbage and begged yours truly to go over and get it out so he could then get out of the doghouse.

Noah and Susan Block, formerly of New York city, arrive on Music street today to take up permanent residence in the newly renovated Frank Adams house. The old house has undergone nearly two years of renovation work by Will Monast. A moving van from the city arrived last week with most of their possessions.

Sal Laterra of Providence, R.I., celebrated his 84th birthday on Tuesday at his home. He was unable to come to the Vineyard for the special occasion.

Jim and Holly Coyne of Music street proudly announce that their daughter Katherine will marry Ryan Coyle, of Tulsa, Okla., next Saturday at St. Alban’s Church in Washington, D.C. Katherine is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and her husband-to-be from Yale. They plan to live in New York city, where she is vice president of Makovsky and Co., a public relations firm. Ryan is a student in the MBA program at Columbia University. Her father reports that she will not have to change the initials on her luggage; in fact she only has to change one letter in her new last name.

Donnie and Mike Morgan, comanagers of the youth hostel, report that this year marks the 59th season for the hostel. It continues to serve people of all ages and backgrounds from around the world. They will open on May 21 and close Columbus Day weekend. In addition to a volleyball court, they have a bike shelter, full kitchen, outdoor grill and fire pit. They invite you to stop by.

Colleen Morris over at the library reports that in honor of Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday, the Saturday crafts group will be making maracas. The art exhibit for the month of May will be Sheila M. Fane’s landscapes. A reception is planned for 4 p.m. on May 12.

Judy McCarthy reports that the bake sales held at the conclusion of each performance of Once Upon an Island Jr. earned over $500; the money was donated to the Red Cross for Haitian relief efforts.

Micheline Sonia reminds us to mark calendars for the Mexican night dinner buffet fundraiser for the sixth grade class. As you may recall, they had a superb Italian night last year. It will be held Friday evening, May 14 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Grange Hall. You can buy tickets ahead of time from any sixth grade student, or call Micheline at 508-696-7866.

Jeremy Berlin reports that starting next Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria the Friday night coffeehouse will begin. For information call him at 508-696-3007.

Hayden Blair over at the police department reports that on Saturday, May 8, there will be an open house retirement party for Chief Beth Toomey after 27 years of public service, 16 of them as our chief. Please bring a dessert for four or make a donation to the food pantry.

“On April 19, 1975, extensive renovations of the children’s room upstairs at the West Tisbury Library were approved by the trustees. The money to pay for the changes would come from the book sales and gift fund, not taxpayers.”
