Sandy Mincone, athletic director for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, announced this week she will step down at the end of the current school year.

Ms. Mincone, who was appointed athletic director in August for a one-year period, is leaving the position to move off-Island. She said her decision came after much thought and consideration.

“I will miss the job and the people I have had the pleasure to work with,” she said. “I wish I could pick the school up and take it with me, but of course I can’t.”

Ms. Mincone said she is looking for employment off-Island. It was an eventful year for Ms. Mincone, who saw the loss of the fabled Island Cup football game against Nantucket. The game has been re-instated, and will be played on the Vineyard this November.

This was also the school’s first full year in the Eastern Athletic Conference, a conference made up of larger parochial schools from the South Shore.

Superintendent James Weiss said she will be missed. “We’re sad to see her go. In her single year as interim athletic director she did a wonderful job,” he said.

He said the school will advertise the position near the end of the school year. “I know [principal] Steve Nixon has a few other vacancies he needs to fill first. Then he will look to hire someone,” he said.

He also said the job description could change. “Will the athletic director have exactly the same responsibility? They might not, we’re not sure. It might be a teacher, it might not be a teacher, we are not sure,” he said.
