A sure sign of spring — last week I found the first tick in my hair! The dogs, cat and I are still getting settled in from our long sojourn in White Plains. So nice to see my Island friends again. As good luck would have it, I was called to sub on teacher appreciation day; I can’t tell you the wonderful food and beautiful flowers so many parents dropped off in the faculty room. Thanks to all!

Barbara Silvia has gone for some post-op rehabilitation and would love to hear from her friends. You may write to Barbara at Plymouth Hospital Life Center, 94 Obrey Road, Plymouth, MA 02360. If you miss hearing her voice, as I do, call her at 774-773-7050.

Nancy Cohen and Roger McGary have returned to their Island home and are certainly enjoying their new screened-in porch.

Finally, a place to bring all those wonderful VHS tapes! Our library has a free VHS exchange rack. Please bring your donations to the front desk. Do not leave them outside the door or in the book drop. Thank you. Also, our monthly mini-book sale will take place on Saturday, May 15, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. I’ll see you there.

Our Miles of Memories Walk to benefit Cape and Islands Alzheimer’s Services will be held on Sunday, May 16. The route is being decided because of road work this year; call Christy Stusse at 508-775-5656 for details or visit online alzcapecod.org/walk. Tom Dresser can also answer your questions at 508-693-1050.

We have lost the company of a very wonderful woman. Mary Buckley, of Coburg, Ontario, a great friend to my family and mother in law of my brother Jim, died Monday, May 3, at her daughter’s home in Coburg, surrounded by her three children, Pat, my sister in law, and Mary’s twins, Mary Jane McLaren and John Buckley. Mary Buckley’s husband, John, had predeceased her by 40 years. Mary Jane’s husband is also named James. All attest to the fact that there was never a better mother or mother in law. Mary Buckley was a retired homemaker, business woman and an avid tournament golfer who only hung up her clubs at age 92. I remember her many kindnesses to me; it was always a treat when she came to visit us in New York.

Get well wishes go out to Barbara Silvia and Sonya Norton.

Anniversary bouquets are sent to John and Nancy Gardella on May 10 and to Tim and Susan Anthony on May 11.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Ellen Dubraska today. May 9 is a party for Christopher Collins, Whitney Kelly, Darcy Jewett and Matheus dos Santos. May 10 is claimed by Helen Staruk. May 11 is shared by Mary Anne D’Alessandro and Tristan Klein. May 12 is for Jyl Manning and P.J. Fleming. And on May 13, Terri Hayes and James Cooley take the cake. Many happy returns.
