The weekend weather was toasty warm. Saturday an Islandwide bike race was held under a bright blue sky and near record warmth. Sunday found us under the same blue sky but with milder temperatures. The orioles (birds that is) have returned to town. The late Emma Whiting had records to prove that they always return by May 12 and bird-watchers will keep a sharp eye out for them on Tuesday. The VTA buses began operating on their summer schedule last Saturday morning with additional weekend trips.

When there is a major news story there is usually a Vineyard person nearby and last Saturday night was no exception. Elaine Pace reports that she and her husband, Dan, were in Times Square to celebrate Dan’s birthday. Thirty minutes before the car started smoking, they were only yards away from the notorious Nissan van as they purchased tickets to a musical. Their theatre, on the edge of the square, was the last one the police allowed people to enter, thankfully. As the story has unfolded, they have come to realize how fortunate they were that no one was harmed. And they had a wonderful celebration of Dan’s birthday to boot!

Sig Van Raan reports that he and his wife, Susan Dickler, have officially arrived for the season although he has been here unofficially since late March working on his Menemsha cottage. They have returned from a weekend visit to Baltimore to watch the Red Sox lose three games to the worst team in baseball. They were visiting Susan’s daughter Willie, who is a nursing student at Johns Hopkins. Sig’s son Jackson just returned from five months in Peru and Costa Rica where he worked as a volunteer with street kids and turtles.

Natalie Grewal, of Creston, British Columbia will be returning to town next week and will be here until October. She will not be employed at Garcia’s Deli because it has gone out of business. She enjoys East Coast living and meeting people so she figures to have little difficulty finding a new job.

Micheline Sonia reports that now is time to mark your calendar for the Mexican night dinner buffet fundraiser for the sixth grade class. As you may recall, they had a superb Italian night last year. The Vineyard Belly Dance and Revue will host special guests and a celebration of their music and dance at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven tonight at 7:30 p.m. Maybe they will come to the retirement party after their show.

A note from the past: “On July 23, 1946 the Grange held its annual summer bazaar at the Agricultural Hall and it was well attended. Among the many attractions were tables with fancy work, home-cooked food, grabs, and cold drinks. An orchestra composed of Antone King, his daughter Gloria and sons Arthur and Antone Jr. provided music during the afternoon. Much interest was aroused in guessing the weight of a large fruit cake made by Anna Davis. The cake was won by John Raymond, son of Juliet Kraetzer of Chilmark. This is the second summer he has won the cake. The two-pound box of Priscilla Hancock chocolates was won by Warren Armitage of Lambert’s Cove. A fortune telling booth was the most popular and the knocking over of milk bottles with a baseball was also popular. Pony rides were given by Rosemarie Duys. Lillian Magnuson reported it was a very successful event for the Grange.
