An Island man was transported off-Island for medical treatment on Tuesday afternoon following a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Skiff avenue and the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Vineyard Haven.

In addition to Tisbury police, Oak Bluffs police, Tisbury Ambulance and Massachusetts state police also responded.

Tisbury police chief Daniel Hanavan said Patricia Hughes, 66, of West Tisbury, was turning onto the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road from Skiff avenue when she struck the side of a Chevy passenger van driven by Joanne Leighton, 55, of Edgartown.

The impact caused the van to spin out of control and into oncoming traffic, where it struck another vehicle driven by Donald Clarke, 58, of Vineyard Haven.

Mr. Clarke was taken by ambulance to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, and later transported to a Boston-area hospital. Due to poor weather conditions, he was not airlifted but was transported via the ferry.

There was no report on his condition yesterday.

Chief Hanavan said no citations have been issued for far, and the investigation is ongoing.
