Two people were injured in a three-car accident Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Old County and State Roads in West Tisbury. The accident occurred ironically just hours before town selectmen discussed an ongoing state plan to change the layout of the intersection for safety reasons.

West Tisbury police, fire fighters, Tri-Town ambulance and Tisbury ambulance were all called to the scene at about 2 p.m Wednesday.

Police said Marcie Jones, 81, of Vineyard Haven, was traveling up-Island on State Road in a 2002 Toyota Camry when she cut across the center line to enter Old County Road. Her car struck a 2003 Subaru Legacy traveling down-Island driven by Patrick Phillips, 52, of West Tisbury.

The impact caused both cars to collide with a 1995 Volvo operated by Megan Lizotte, 34, of Edgartown, who was stopped at the Old County Road stop sign.

Mrs. Jones and Mr. Phillips were transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital via Tri-Town ambulance and the Tisbury Ambulance. Mrs. Jones was cited for negligent operation and failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

Also assisting at the scene were Chilmark, Aquinnah, and Tisbury police, as well as Massachusetts state police.

No information was available about injuries to Mrs. Jones and Mr. Phillips.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is in the process of redesigning the State and Old County Road intersection, which is considered dangerous due to bad angles and poor sight lines for turning.

The redesign plan is still a work in progress at both the state and local levels.
