At a meeting Friday morning, the Martha’s Vineyard airport commission swiftly approved a request for Nectar’s nightclub, and partners Flatbread Pizza Company, to sublease the Outerland property for a second season.

The request came with a recommendation for approval by the land use subcommittee, which discussed the sublease at their May 13 meeting. The full commission also gave Flatbread the green light to construct a clay pizza oven on the property. Flatbread will operate a family-style pizza restaurant on the property during the day through the summer season, with Nectar’s taking over for live music shows later in the evenings.

The property modification will require further permits from the town, but Nectar’s partner Noel Donnellan told commissioners that shouldn’t be a problem. “We expect no difficulty,” he told commissioners.

Commissioners said they expected another request to come through at some point later in the season, when Nectar’s negotiates a sale agreement to buy the property from owner Arthur Rosenthal. Until then, the sublease will stand, and Nectar’s can begin booking acts for their summer lineup.

“We’re a little bit late in booking,” said Mr. Donnellan, when asked by commissioners what kind of entertainment the Island can expect at Nectar’s this season. “We’re working on it,” he added.

But Islanders can expect a diverse lineup similar to that of last season, with lots of local talent, jazz, reggae, and hip-hop acts, and possibly a comedy show and music festival. They can also begin to look forward to a new family eatery. “I think there are enough places that are not welcoming to families,” Flatbread owner Jay Gould told the commission, “So we’ve gone the other way.”

Mr. Gould said after the meeting that Flatbread hoped to begin construction on the pizza oven as early as this week, and that they’d be looking to the community for help. He said he’s looking to use local clay for the oven, and that Islanders will be invited to help mix materials for construction.

In response to a noise complaint sent in by a neighbor, the commission also asked that Nectar’s be vigilant in keeping the noise to a minimum this season by keeping doors closed during shows.

Mr. Donnellan said he and his partners hope to be ready to open the doors to patrons by June 15.
