The search for a new assistant principal at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School will continue, after the school officials decided this week that neither of the two final candidates were a good fit for the position.

“No one was chosen,” said school superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss yesterday. “We’re going to repost.”

The process to find a replacement for assistant principal Neal Weaver, whose contract expires this month, began several weeks ago, according to high school principal Stephen Nixon. The initial pools of candidates was large but was whittled down to six finalists by a selection committee made up of school committee members, teachers, parents, students and a member of the NAACP.

Last week the candidate list was narrowed down to Anne Wagner, who works as a dean of students and advanced placement English teacher in Gardner, and Michael Richard, an assistant principal in Belchertown. The two finalists were invited for daylong interviews at the high school, and principal Nixon said that he expected a candidate to be chosen this week.

But Mr. Weiss said that didn’t happen, and the process will begin anew next week. “We’re looking for the right person, not just a person,” he said. “We don’t believe we had the right person in this mix.”
