Please Adopt Us

Last week I hinted that we would have something very special for all of you cat lovers, and here they are: the animal shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has two of the most special rag doll cats. They are a brother, Bear, and his sister, Squeeks. If you don’t know what a rag doll cat looks like, please stop at the shelter to see them; they are really beautiful and so friendly they will melt your heart. And while we cannot insist that they be adopted together, we will try very hard to place them together because they are so close and would be very lonely without each other.

Our black cats seem to be multiplying and it gets confusing trying to tell them apart but I will try. We have: Cyrus, the house mascot who is anxious to find a home; Binx, who is rather shy but very sweet; Walter, a stray from Edgartown who just has to be someone’s pet; Mantra; Zephrus, a stray from West Tisbury; and Blackie, another stray from West Tisbury. We also have Dolly, a handsome tuxedo cat (black and white); Dixie, a beautiful calico; Phoebe, an orange and white cat; and Miss Misty, a wonderful gray and black tiger.

And let’s not forget Louise, the guinea pig who just loves to be held and cuddled — isn’t there some child on the Island who would love to own sweet Louise, who comes with her own special cage?

On Saturday, June 19, the shelter will host the second annual Celebration of Pets at Sunset Lake in Oak Bluffs from noon to 2 p.m. There will be a blessing of the animals by Father Nagle of the Good Shepherd Parish, and special treats from Good Dog Goods and pony rides from Pond View Farm. Bring your pets — dogs, cats and ponies are all welcome! Please have cats in carriers and dogs on leashes. There will also be a raffle and a prize basket with Dog Agility Demonstration. All pets will win a ribbon.

Please call the shelter for information; the phone number is 508-627-8662. Hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
