In a first for her gallery, Louisa Gould this week opens a European show, European Subjects Painted by Island Artists. The public opening reception is on Saturday, June 19, free from 5 to 7 p.m. with live music and refreshments.

The show includes five artists; Anne Grandin, Claudio Gasparini, Jules Worthington, Donna Blackburn and Louisa Gould.

Ms. Grandin, a member of the Copley Society in Boston, new to the gallery, collaborated with Island students on a 45-foot mural now outside the Stop & Shop in Vineyard Haven. She travels often to Italy; her Italian landscape painting Stonecone is indicative of her fluid, flowing style, always inspired by the American Indian philosophy of the circle of life.

Ms. Grandin will teach a landscape painting workshop on August 9 through the gallery’s new workshop program (see online marthasvineyardworkshops.com).

Claudio Gasparini, also new to the gallery, blends of Impressionism, post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Naivism in his colorful style, as seen in his emotionally charged painting The Old Village. He was raised in northern Italy and is primarily a self-taught artist.

Jules Worthington, a well-traveled Chilmark plein air painter, has painted all over the world. German Impressionist art inspired his present style, painting the brilliant light with color. His newest creations are from a trip to Greece in September 2009.

Vineyard painter Donna Blackburn has been inspired by French Impressionists. She travels to painting workshops every other year in France, most recently painting on the French Riviera. Her work, primarily in oils and acrylic watercolors, is very detailed and magnificently captures the feeling of a day at a European cafe.

Louisa Gould, a lifelong painter and photographer, lived in Spain in both 2007 and 2010 while shooting for the America’s Cup races. She notes that, “Spain is wonderful, the afternoon light in [her painting] La Mancha is simply gorgeous ... while the setting sun in Cyclades, a painting from a trip to Greece in 2009, typifies the wonderful hues of white stucco homes and churches of the Greek islands and changing colors of the other Mediterranean Sea.” In Montenegro, Ms. Gould captures the bright Mediterranean juxtaposed with white buildings and vibrant flowers.

The show runs through June 29 at Louisa Gould Gallery, 54 Main street in Vineyard Haven. For details, see online louisagould.com.
