The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living dinner, dance with door prizes and silent auction will be this evening at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs from 6 to 11 p.m. Tickets are still available at the door for $10. Money raised from the event will benefit the Supportive Day Program which needs to find a new home. Dinner will be a vast array of delectable delights, dancing to the music of deejay Steve McCullough, wonderful door prizes which will be drawn every 20 minutes during the evening, and an eclectic array of silent auction items for your shopping pleasure. Please join us in our first fund-raising event as the newly organized center for living, formerly the Island Council on Aging. Meet the board members from your respective towns and join in the fun.

On Saturday, June 26 there will be a fundraiser for Robert O’Leary to support him in his campaign to represent us in the 10th Congressional District, the position presently held by Bill Delahunt who will not be seeking re-election. The fundraiser will be held in the Field Gallery in West Tisbury, across from Alley’s General Store. Please join us between 5 and 7 p.m. to meet Robert O’Leary and to offer your encouragement and support. RSVP by calling Paddy Moore at 508-693-1627.

Samuel Vanderhoop Lee, son of Marshall Lee and Martha Vanderhoop, and his group of musicians Magic Man will be featured on Good Morning America on Saturday, June 26, during their musical segment featuring new artists. Listen for their music.

Welcome to Garth and Ollie Edwards who will arrive today for the week at their beach home on Abel’s Hill. Ollie has been recuperating from being ill this spring and we look forward to their arrival. They will be accompanied by their son Garth N. Edwards and his wife, Jennie. Their home will be filled to the brim during the holiday weekend with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It will be wonderful to see them, and their many friends from across the Vineyard will welcome their arrival as well.

Get well wishes to Aquinnah executive secretary Jeffrey Burgoyne, who was admitted to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and was scheduled for surgery on Wednesday. Did Jeff win the award for the first patient to have surgery in the new hospital?

School is out! Watch for the children who will now be playing most of the day away from their desks. Please be sure they have their VTA bus passes for the summer which includes unlimited rides through Dec. 31. The passes may be purchased at their respective Vineyard schools offices for $25.

The Aquinnah special town meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, June 30 at 7 p.m. There are only seven articles on the warrant and the meeting could conceivably be over and done with in less than an hour.

Welcome to Catherine Thompson, the new Aquinnah Public Library director. Cathy was once the Chilmark Library director before her move to Chicago. She recently returned to Chilmark and has enjoyed a brief retirement before taking her new position in Aquinnah. Cathy is looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting many new ones. Just a reminder — the Aquinnah library will be closed on July 3.

Jennifer Christy completed her work at the town library on Saturday and was honored by a surprise dinner at the home of Molly Purves and Curtis Langer and Rodeo Purves Langer on Thursday evening with members of the Aquinnah community. On Saturday, Jennifer was honored by community members at a reception at the library.

The Mansion House is sponsoring a great community offer for the month of July 2010. Every Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. there will be a class open to all and free of charge. Their instructors will teach Pilates, strength training and core work. Thank you to the Mansion House for providing such a wonderful opportunity for the entire Vineyard to participate in to try a new exercise program.

Bill and Joan Kistner returned to their home in New York on Sunday afternoon after a visit with our grandson Noah. They were especially here to help Noah celebrate his fourth birthday which was another wonderful afternoon at the Aquinnah town hall for about four dozen of his closest friends and classmates from the Chilmark Preschool and Mandy Tomkins’s day care. The afternoon festivities began with juggler Mark Kenny who entertained the children with his skills. This year’s theme was Toy Story 3 and was the highlight of most of the decorations. The big jumping machine trampoline is always a favorite among the toddlers. Great food, great friends, great fun.
