Paddy Keenan is Pipin‘ Hot

Go Gaelic or go home this Saturday when Paddy Keenan takes the stage at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. Mr. Keenan has been described as the Jimi Hendrix of the uillean pipes. John Coltrane also comes to mind. But both comparisons, impressive as they are, pale in light of his actual accomplishment. He was a founding member of the Bothy Band.

In 1974 the Bothy Band helped push traditional Irish music to new heights. Mr. Keenan, who took up the pipes at age 10, was its driving force. Those lucky enough to see the band live during their five-year heyday have never known sorrow again. Hyperbole or hard fact? You be the judge.

Mr. Keenan has continued to impress, winning the traditional Irish musician of the year award in 2002 and releasing several solo albums, all of which made the traditional albums ‘best of’ lists. At Saturday’s performance, Paddy will be accompanied by guitarist/vocalist Gene Durkee.
