The last quarter moon rises in the wee hours of Sunday morning, accompanied by the bright planet Jupiter. The two are in the zodiacal constellation Pisces.

Night of Fireworks

If the sky is clear, there is more to see than fireworks. The fireworks will take place in a moonless sky. The moon won’t show up until well after 1 a.m. Monday morning.

The evening planets will be glowing. The bright planet Venus, the easiest to find, appears high in the western sky. There will be no mistaking the bright planet high above the twilight; use it as a guide to the other two planets.

Higher and to the left there is the bright star Regulus, in the zodiacal constellation Leo. Higher still and to the left, the bright red planet Mars shines. The ringed planet Saturn is almost equidistant from the others, to the left and it too is higher in the sky.

All three planets and one star form a distinct line in the sky. Venus is to the far right and Saturn is at the far left.

Planet watching will be interesting in the nights that follow. Mars is slowly moving eastward and will come close to Saturn by mid July. Venus moves eastward and will pass by Regulus.
